When a transaction commits, the changes made to objects in the client are sent to the database (how and when the data are sent may vary). One of the important questions in this context is whether or not the cache (object and/or page cache) should be cleared. Preserving the cache may degrade performance if the objects in the cache are not reused. However, if the objects are used again, preserving them in the cache may increase performance. Another related issue is whether or not the locks set by the previous transaction should be released. If the objects are cleared from the cache, preserving the locks may seem like a waste of resources, but if the cache is preserved and the objects are referenced again, this will increase performance since no extra locks have to be acquired and those objects resident in cache do not need to be sent from the server again. Hohenstein et al. illustrates the effect of such tuning opportunities [Hohenstein 1997]. Most Java applications use navigational access; that is, the application uses object references to navigate between the objects in the application and database.
